DAPHNE – Bayside Academy senior Shelby Builta has signed a scholarship for track and field with Samford University in Birmingham.
“We are extremely proud of Shelby’s performances and wish her the best at Samford University as she continues to pursue her athletic dreams at a Division 1 program,” said Alan Foster, Director of Admissions at Bayside Academy and Builta’s track and field coach. “Academically, she is a coach’s dream; great student, disciplined, organized, responsible and motivated to win in the classroom and on the field. She always has a positive attitude, is willing to out-work the competition and displays fantastic sportsmanship. Bayside Academy has been very fortunate to have such a fine young person represent our school.”
Builta won both the Javelin and Discus titles at the State Meet in 2009. She won her first 12 competitions this year with State, leading marks and school records in the Shot Put (33’ 4.5”), the Javelin (131’ 10”) and the Discus (129’ 4”). She won the Javelin and Discus at the Nokia Sugar Bowl meet in New Orleans, again lead the Admirals to win at the prestigious Lyon Newell Throws Meet at UMS and recently placed 2nd and 4th in the National DyeStat Meet of Champions. Builta’s Javelin and Discus marks also rank in the top 20 nationally.
Builta is the daughter of Wonda and Arthur Builta of Daphne.
