DAPHNE, Ala. — Bayside Academy’s Scholars Bowl team traveled to LAMP High School in Montgomery for the Feb. 5 Deep South Academic Challenge. Schools from Georgia, Florida, Alabama and Mississippi fielded teams in varsity, JV, and middle school divisions. Fourteen teams competed in the varsity division.
John Clark, Emily Grant, Jordan Matthews and Mary Katherine Shoemaker represented Bayside. Competing only in the varsity division, Bayside’s team went 6-0 in the preliminary rounds, toppling teams from Altamont, Maclay, Hancock, T.R. Miller, Brookwood, and LAMP. As the team entered the playoffs, they were the only group with a 6-0 record. They defeated both Arab and Maclay to end the tournament with an 8-0 record.
Two teams competed in the UMS-Wright Invitational Scholars Bowl tournament on February 8. The A Team (John Clark, Emily Grant, Jordan Matthews, Mary Katherine Shoemaker and Spencer York) went 6-0 in the preliminary rounds.
Tackling LAMP A, Faith Academy, Alma-Bryant, TR Miller B, Escambia Academy A and St. Paul’s in the preliminary rounds, they defeated UMS-Wright in the finals.
Representing Bayside on the B team were Raegan Grant, Will Grey, Jeriel Ng and Joseph Olmstead.
Bayside’s team, for the third consecutive year, has qualified for the National Academic Championship.
