The holiday season is synonymous with festive markets and online pop-up shops, offering unique gift options that draw eager shoppers.
However, the Better Business Bureau (BBB) Serving Central and South Alabama is advising consumers to approach these temporary retail spaces with caution. Reports of poor-quality merchandise, undelivered orders and challenges with returns are common pitfalls that shoppers face.
To help shoppers protect their finances and enjoy a hassle-free experience, the BBB has outlined practical tips for navigating holiday shopping, particularly at temporary locations and unfamiliar online stores.
Guard your personal information: For minor purchases, cash is often the safest option, as it avoids sharing sensitive financial information. For more significant transactions, a credit card is recommended because it offers extra protection if a retailer vanishes or fails to deliver on an order.
Exercise caution with special orders: Before placing an order, ensure the seller's contact details are valid and functional. Obtain clear delivery timelines and always request a receipt or confirmation of the transaction.
Consider shop longevity: Ask if the store will remain open after the holidays to accommodate potential returns or exchanges. If it won't, double-check that the product meets your expectations before finalizing a purchase.
Inspect product quality: Be on the lookout for counterfeit items, particularly high-demand products or designer goods sold at prices that seem too good to be true.
Understand product warranties: For items with warranties, confirm how servicing or replacement claims can be handled.
Staying safe with online holiday pop-up shops: Temporary online retailers also proliferate during the holiday season. The BBB advises shoppers to research these businesses thoroughly. Check for verified contact details, browse reviews, and investigate potential scam reports linked to the merchant. Always verify the company's profile on BBB.org before making a purchase.
Consumers should also steer clear of deals that appear unusually enticing, as they may signal fraudulent activity.
The BBB emphasizes vigilance when shopping at seasonal retail locations — both in person and online. Retain receipts and monitor credit card statements closely to catch unauthorized charges promptly. Shoppers are encouraged to report suspected scams through the BBB Scam Tracker at www.BBB.org/ScamTracker.
