GULF SHORES, Ala. — The Dolphins lost to 6A region 1 opponent B.C. Rain with a 42-24 score but showed a lot more potential especially on offense by airing it out more and going for more deep plays.
The Dolphins were the first to strike on the board with a Todd Hoover screen for 20 yards followed by a 26-yard touchdown from Jackson Newman to Brodie Wilkinson. The extra point was no good after the holder bobbled the ball. The first drive for BC Rain did not finish well after a Jacob Knight broke up a deep touchdown attempt and a few plays later, Jacob McDaniel caught an interception from Red Raiders’ Clifford Powell. But the Dolphins could not capitalize off that turnover.
From that point, Rain’s Keyshawn Harper took control of the offense and rushed for 5 yards, 10 yards and 19 yards before an 8-yard touchdown. The Raiders also missed the extra point kick to make the score 6-6.
The next GSHS drive, another fumble was recovered by Rain and Harper scored on a 2-yard run. The two point conversion by Red Raiders FB Jermaine Ely Jr was good to make the score 14-6 early in the second quarter.
Later Harper’s 53-yard run set up a Powell keeper to make the score 20-6.
The Raiders onside kick attempt ended in Gulf Shores’ possession. That set up a 61-yard touchdown throw from Newman to Wilkinson. With the 2-point conversion no good, it was 20-12. Rain went for 53 yards to threaten, but Newman (at defensive end) stripped the ball from Powell to close the first half.
After halftime, McDaniel blocked a Rain punt. After a long drive, the Dolphins scored on a 4-yard touchdown run by Todd Hoover (2 point conversion no good) for a 20-18 score.
On the next drive James Maloney had a tackle for loss, but Powell threw a 35-yard pass to Kendrell Davis and Harper ran for an 11-yard score. The 2-point conversion was good to make it 28-18.
BC Rain added eight more points after a Gulf Shores punt with a 9-yard throw from Powell to Nicholas Safford (36-18) in the fourth quarter. Gulf Shores did not go without a fight with a 17-yard touchdown throw from Newman to WR Caden Goodrich (2 point conversion no good) to make it 36-24 with 5:20 left in the game. The Raiders’ final score was a 10-yard run by Harper with 32.4 seconds left. Nicholas Safford intercepted Newman with 8.2 seconds left.
Harper had 292 yards and four touchdowns. Wilkinson had more than 100 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
Gulf Shores head coach Jamie Williams said that the opposing team was just too good and, ”We have to learn to win.” He was proud of his players that clearly fought hard this game.
Next,Dolphins (0-4) travel to Ladd-Peebles Stadium for Week Five to face the LeFlore Rattlers (1-3).
