BCHM exhibit recounts Postal history

ELBERTA, Ala. — Baldwin County residents only have a few weeks to see an exhibit featuring the U.S. Postal Service’s history before it leaves the Baldwin County Heritage Museum.

The exhibit, which runs through April 19, features a variety of items detailing the Postal Services contribution in the nation. Items include various generations of postal uniforms, packages and letter boxes, as well as the short-lived postal currency and badges.

The exhibit is on loan from Elberta residents John and Kim Conti, who have an affinity for Postal history.

“We started collecting back in 1999,” John Conti said. “The museum took effect in 2005.”

That museum is a traveling exhibit the couple takes upon request to various locations all over the country.

“We’ve even presented at the U.S. Postal Workers’ national convention,” John Conti said.

There, they take visitors through and give insight into the Postal Service and its little know impact on the formation of the country, such as the railroad and airlines. The exhibit even features early late 19th and early 20th century currency.

“They were the only bank still solvent after the Great Depression,” John Conti said. “They had over $3 billion still in the account after the Depression ended.

With such enthusiasm, one might assume the Contis are veteran postal workers. But that’s not the case.

“We just love the history of the Postal Service,” John Conti said.

Baldwin County Heritage Museum is located at 25521 U.S. Highway 98 in Elberta. For more information, call 251-986-8375.
