BAY MINETTE – The Baldwin County High School Baseball Program is having a reunion.
Baseball alumni from throughout the program's history are invited to participate in a fund-raising alumni game Saturday at the high school.
Any interested residents can also participate in a home run derby that morning. Entrance into the derby and game is $10 each, with no charge for spectators.
"Money raised (from the event) will go towards the purchase of a new brick wall backstop pad," BCHS Baseball Head Coach Peter Bezeredi said.
Additionally, residents can buy brick wall nameplates for $50. "The money raised from the bricks will go into the Baldwin County home run Club account to help with program costs such as ordering equipment for the 2010 seasons, paying umpires, paying for transportation and field supplies and paying utility bills like electricity and water," Bezeredi said.
He said a common misconception is that athletics programs receive money from the county or school system. "The truth is, we pay for everything ourselves from electricity to baseballs," he said.
Registration for the derby and game will begin at 9:45 a.m. at the BCHS baseball field at the school. The Derby will begin at 10:30, followed by a complimentary lunch at 11 for alumni game participants, players, coaches and current baseball parents.
Prior to the derby, beginning at 10:10, alumni will be able to try out the newly renovated batting cages.
The alumni game will begin at noon, followed by a Varsity scrimmage and practice.
Bezeredi said alumni Jamey Jaye, who was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1994, may make an appearance to support his former team.
Jaye played minor league baseball for the Great Falls Pioneer League and the Bakersfield California League until 2006. For information, contact Bezeredi at (251) 978-1311 or pbezeredi@bcbe.org.
