BCHS boys basketball team returns three key seniors

BAY MINETTE, Alabama — The Baldwin County High Tigers return a solid senior corps with experience for the 2011-2012 season.

“We have three seniors,” BCHS coach Lorenzo Hunter said, “Apollo Dailey and Marcus Johnson and Larry Rogers.”

Junior Xavier Dortch earned the starting platoon’s point guard position last year and will be back along with some key underclassmen such as Kirk Johnson, Andre Cox, Justin Mayes, Marquise Johnson, Ewing Mayberry, Devante Preston, and Trevor Anderson. Sophomores Montez Brown and Lorenzo Fields look to get court time as well.

The Tigers went 17-11 last year in 6A Area 4 and will face tough area play from McGill-Toolen and Williamson again this year. Satsuma makes up the fourth Area 4 team.

“McGill-Toolen and Williamson are always strong and they play hard down to the wire. I expect us to stay up with them, but I know they will bring it.”

The season opener for the Tigers will be a family affair tonight as BCHS head coach Lorenzo Hunter and his Tigers visit Foley and younger brother Shumbe Hunter. There will also be a whole lot of Pink going on Friday night in Foley as the Hunter brothers and their players will display their united fight against cancer, the disease that took their mother Louise three years ago.

“We thought it would be a good way to honor her and support the effort to find a cure,” said Lorenzo Hunter as his team got ready for a work out. “But it’s also really about raising awareness in the community about cancer and the need to get screened early and often. Early detection can really make a big difference.”

Proceeds from donations will go to the local chapter of the American Cancer Society. The coaches will wear pink and the players wear some permissible pink articles of clothing.

The boys varsity will tip off at 7:30 p.m., but the girls and the JV squads will also be involved beginning with JV play around 4 p.m.

“It’s for everybody,” Lorenzo Hunter said. “A chance to get together and show support for this important cause. We’re calling it, ‘Coaches verses Cancer.’”

After their opener at Foley, BCHS will be home Saturday hosting Escambia County.
