ATMORE-Baldwin County High School Coach David Wofford reached his 100th career victory when his Tigers defeated the Escambia County High School Blue Devils 20-6 on the road.
After a touchback on the opening kick off Baldwin County started on its own 20 yard line. The opening play resulted in an illegal motion penalty against the Tigers which started a penalty frenzy. With first and 15, Jordan Ebert threw a three yard pass to Andrew King that was picked off by the Blue Devils' Marshall Rolin to give ECHS the ball at midfield.
Sophomore Derrick Williams started for the Blue Devils, in for injured Ricco Stallworth. With third down and 13 Williams hit Rolin for a 42-yard touchdown pass to place Escambia County on the score board first with 8:24 left in the first quarter.
Demetrius Coley took the seven yard kick off return to start the Tiger's second possession of the game. Naman Scott started with a 13 yard rush to start the drive while King rushed for 31 yards in five plays to set up a 31-yard touchdown run by Scott. The extra point was good to give the Tigers the 7-6 lead with 4:02 left in the first quarter. The Tigers then recovered a fumble on the kick off with 4:00 left in the first quarter. BCHS was unable to capitalize on the recovery and fumbled the ball back over to Escambia County. After five plays, butterfingers plagued the Blue Devils once again when they fumbled the ball on their own 23-yard line. A pair of rushes for King and Scott placed the ball on the 10. Ebert then was sacked and a penalty set Baldwin County back to first and goal on the 42-yard line. With third and goal at the 41, Scott broke away for a 40-yard rush and was held up at the one. King was tackled in the back field for a two yard loss turning the ball over on downs to the Blue Devils on their own three yard line. The ball went back and forth for the remainder of the first half while BCHS led the half time score 7-6.
ECHS started the second half on Baldwin County's 31. The Tiger defense stopped Nieko Williams in the back filed for a three yard loss then on the next play Justin Stevens sacked Derrick Williams for another six yard loss. Baldwin County was pushed back by one of their many pass interference penalties to give the Blue Devils the first down. Escambia County was unable to move the ball much further and turned the ball over on downs near midfield. King cuts loose for a 55-yard touchdown run to extend the Tigers lead 13-6 with 8:03 in the third quarter. The two point conversion was no good.
Midway into the fourth quarter, Mario Butler returned a punt 28 yards to set Chris Bush up for a 25-yard touchdown run to bring the score up 20-6 with 7:42 left to play. The Tigers held on to the score to take their third victory of the year 20-6.
"Their defense did a good job holding us tonight but our guys came out to play," BCHS coach David Wofford said. "Our defense held on to the game well, we have seven players out due to injuries and several others were suspended for team infractions but we still held on to the win. I think Coach (Kyle) Davis is doing an excellent job with his players, number two (Michael Mitchell) I have to say is a great player, he has a heart of a giant and goes out their and gives it his all despite his actual size. Overall I think Davis has a talented team."
Wofford will take his 3-2 Tigers down Highway 59 next week when they face county foe Robertsdale Golden Bears.
