BCHS girls advance to Regional

BAY MINETTE, Ala. — The Baldwin County High School Lady Tigers advanced to the Sweet 16 of the Alabama High School Athletic Association Girls Basketball South Region Tournament. The Lady Tigers defeated Fairhope's Lady Pirates to take the sub-region game 51-37.

Fairhope jumped out early with the 4-0 lead until LaTreka Jenkins nailed a two point jump shot which started a small 7-2 run for BCHS giving them the 7-6 lead. The Lady Pirates quickly took the lead back with their own 8-1 run for the 14-8 lead. Jenkins and company answered with their own 8-0 run at the end of the first quarter to take the 16-14 lead.

Second quarter belonged to the Lady Pirates as they outscored BCHS 10-6 to take the two point lead, 24-22, into half time.

The third quarter became the CoCo Knight show as Baldwin County's dominant freshman single handedly outscored Fairhope 7-6 to close the gap to one, 30-29. Baldwin County came out strong in the fourth quarter with a 20-3 run to give them the 49-33 lead but Abby Phillips scored four points in the last 34 seconds of the game for the Lady Pirates but the damage was done as the BCHS Lady Tigers took the 51-37 win and advanced to the regional tournament at the Mitchell Center at the University of South Alabama.

Knight led the game with a 26 point high followed by Jenkins with 15 points on the night. The Tigers had four players (Alex Easley, Kantrell Bush, Courtney Stanley, and Aprica Bradley) scoring two points each. Latia Pullum and Nakea McDougal closed out Baldwin County's scorers with one point apiece. Scorers for the Lady Pirates are as followed Raven Priolo 13, Megan Dowdy 12, Kali Martin six, Abby Phillips six, and Luci Crutcher two.

Baldwin County will play Blount in the first round of the Regional Tournament Tuesday at USA's Mitchell Center.
