BAY MINETTE, Alabama - Baldwin County’s best senior baseball players gathered at Tiger Field in Bay Minette on Saturday afternoon in the inaugural East/West All-Star game double-header to raise money for the Bay Minette Lions Club.
“It was a great event to get the guys out and raise money for the Bay Minette Lions Club,” Baldwin County High School and East team coach Peter Bezeredi said. “It really gave the guys a chance to play one more game and we had a great day with great weather.”
Every Baldwin County school, minus Spanish Fort, who was participating in the 5A state baseball finals, participated inthe game. Filling in for Spanish Fort were players from Satsuma, Davidson and Alma Bryant.
Of all the teams the Fairhope Pirates had the most representatives with a total of seven players on the roster including University of South Alabama signee Beecher Faust. The host Tigers had five players in the game.
“It was a time when these kids can just come out and relax and have some fun,” Robertsdale and East coach Kevin Raley said. “They could really come out and enjoy meeting new players and coaches. To me, that was my favorite part.”
Unlike a regular season game, the All-Star game at times seemed like a pick-up sandlot game that featured many players playing different positions throughout the double-header.
A big thrill came in game one when Daphne Trojan right handed batter Stephen Williams decided to try his hand at batting left handed. Williams finished the day left handed by going 0-2 with an RBI.
“It was a lot of fun to just come out and relax and to play your game. I think it turned out great,” Raley said. “We appreciate the Lions Club putting it on and hopefully next year we can get it a little bigger and we can get a Mobile and Baldwin County thing going on.”
Team East got on the board in their top half of the first inning in game one when Faust reached on an error, driving in the second run of the game giving Team East the early 2-0 lead. With team East leading 3-0 in the fourth Joe Stassen for Team West brought in Williams with an infield base hit. Williams scored on a wild throw to first base. Stassen later scored in the inning tying the score at 3-3.
That scored held up the rest of game one leading to a final score of 3-3.
Team East outlasted Team West 13-11 in game two. The teams went back-and-forth from the beginning, leading up to the seventh inning when Satsuma Gator Kevin Barnett hit a triple scoring two runs giving Team East the cushion they needed to get the win.
