FOLEY, Alabama – The Baldwin County High School boys and girls basketball teams swept the “Coaches vs. Cancer” games against Foley’s Lions on Monday at Foley High School and picked up critical 6A Area 3 wins in the process.
The Tigers and Lady Tigers both improved to 4-1 in area play with wins over the Lions.
Justin Mayes led BCHS with 14 points, Marquise Johnson and Montez Brown had seven apiece and Lorenzo Fields scored six for the Tigers, who host LeFlore on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
“I thought we played okay,” BCHS boys head coach Lorenzo Hunter said of his team’s win over brother, Shumbe Hunter’s Foley Lions. “I thought Foley had a good game plan early on. They kind of startled us a little bit, the way they mixed defenses up. (Shumbe) has his kids playing hard, they are coming along.”
The Tigers held a 24-18 lead at the half and extended the lead to 36-24 by the end of the third period.
“We are learning, having to make some players play some different roles because we have a couple guys banged up. Overall I thought we did well, well enough to win the ball game. Of course it is always good to get an area win.”
Foley’s Zavion Strickland led all scorers with 18 points and Jalen Henry added 10 for the Lions, who begin play in the Wildcat Classic on Thursday in Pensacola.
The BCHS Lady Tigers defeated Foley’s Lady Lions 54-39 in the girls game.
“They played hard, that’s our M.O.,” BCHS coach Robert Wills said. “We are going to try and run, run, run, then run some more. We’re still not polished on the offensive end, but we are getting there. We have to learn to be patient.”
The Lady Tigers will host LeFlore on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
Foley and Baldwin County players wore pink socks and trim, while the Foley coaching staff wore pink polo shirts to show support for cancer awareness. The school held a raffle to win a 40-inch flat screen television, with proceeds benefiting the American Cancer Society.
