DAPHNE — The Tigers of Baldwin County High won the Original Oyster House Thanksgiving Holiday Tournament at Daphne HIgh Saturday with a 56-42 victory over Davidson.

The undefeated Tigers improved to 5-0 and are ranked No. 9 in the state 6A sports writers poll. It was the second win over the Warriors this season. BCHS battled through a back-and-forth first period to lead 14-10 before building a 12-point 28-16 lead at the half.

BCHS head coach Lorenzo Hunter said his team is playing well and always eager to take on tough teams. "Davidson made some runs at us. But we weathered the storm and played good defense. We've played some tough teams so far. You don't get better unless you play tough opponents. I believe it's important that you play good people early and I knew playing Vigor and Daphne and Atmore (Escambia County, Ala.) our big rival and Davidson twice now in front of big crowds is what we need to do in order to get better."

The Tigers were led in the final by Most Valuable Player Michael Stanley who scored 16 points against Davidson. Tiger teammates Mario Butler and Chris Bush added 11 each and Charleston Gandy scored nine. The Warriors were led by Reginald Jones' 12 and Cornell Knight's 10. Gandy along with Jones and Daphne's Preston Solomon were also named to the all-tournament team.

Hunter said he expects the area battle with Daphne, McGill-Toolen Catholic and Satsuma to be as tough or tougher than last year.

"I know that all of them are scrappy teams," he said. "The (Yellow Jackets) are much more athletic that they have been. I look for it to be a tough region all around. I tell kids all season that this is all about getting better and getting ready for the tournament because you could be one and out at tournament time. So our plan is just to get better and get ready for the competition to come down the road."

On Friday, BCHS defeated host Daphne 61-50 as Stanley hit for 24 points for the Tigers and Solomon made 12 for the Trojans.

Daphne got it's first win of the season Saturday in the consolation game with a 70-58 victory over Ft. Walton Beach High. Daphne's Michael Hobbs scored 26 points, Starling King and T.J. Yeldon had nine each and Justin Jackson added five.

DHS head coach Cedric Yelding said it was an important win after dropping three close games to Baker, Theodore and Williamson.

"It's a big win for us," he said. "It's always good to get that first win under your belt." DHS will host Fairhope Friday at Trojan Gym at 7:30 p.m.
