DAPHNE – The Daphne Shootout turned into a 'showerout' Saturday night. After 35 games and good weather turned to good-enough for a while, officials called the softball tournament for safety's sake one semifinal and one championship game short of finishing.
Based on overall tournament records, Baldwin County High took the title with a perfect 5-0 mark.
The Lady Tigers were set to meet Foley in the second semifinal round before the event was called. One semi was declared official after three innings with Satsuma the winner over Spanish Fort 6-0.
With identical 4-1 records through the quarters, Satsuma was named the runner-up edging out the Lady Lions based on fewest runs allowed.
BCHS senior Candace Guy finished with four complete wins and pitched in all five games for the Lady Tigers who topped Foley 4-1, John Curtis 5-3 and Auburn 3-2 in pool play before meeting Auburn again and winning 2-0 in the first round of elimination.
In the quarterfinals, BCHS met John Curtis again defeating the Louisianna-based Patriots 9-2.
Britney Adams, Jimeshia Bennett, Amber Broughton, Kayla Bryars, Carli Demko, Darla Flowers, Rachel Wood and Guy all contributed to the Lady Tiger offensive output. Hope Roberts also pitched several innings of relief for BCHS.
The Lady Lions, led by Gabby McNair's pitching, defeated Daphne 5-1 in the quarters and Mary Montgomery in round one. Foley went 3-1 in the pool by rebounding to beat John Curtis 9-5 and posting 6-0 and 9-0 shutouts over DHS and Curtis.
Other elimination round games saw Fairhope advance past Homewood , Gulf Shores fall to Satsuma, DHS get by Flomaton, Robertsdale fall to Curtis and Spanish Fort top Elkmont.
Dothan, the top first-round seed, was eliminated by SFHS in the quarters.
Satsuma made it to the semis with a win over the Lady Pirates in the quarters.
