Parental Guidance
With today’s focus on the economy, many people are considering various options or assistance available to enrich their educational opportunities.
Many businesses are offering current and new employees a chance to engage in training activities that will allow them to learn and enhance their on-the-job performance skills.
Some people love the idea of “continual learning.” This is known as the ongoing process of increasing knowledge and skills in one’s field of study or career, whether it is formal or informal. Consequently, returning to college, no matter what age, is imperative when maximizing one’s level of success while searching for a different or better career option.
Since it is natural for people to have a desire to change jobs, they must consider:
rAcquiring experience for a particular advanced position.
rExploring reasons for needing an increase in salary.
rRealizing when it is time for a change in stress levels or supervisors
rUnderstanding why they desire improved work hours.
No matter what the circumstances might be, it is wise to know when it is the right time to voice your concerns for a new job or transfer. If you have recently received a new certification or degree that enables you the right to a apply for a higher position, then it is your responsibility to approach your current supervisor and hope that he or she is fair in deciding whether or not you are the best “fit” for any potential positions.
Promotions within a company are granted in a variety of ways. If a position is not readily available that you desire, it is still appropriate to inform your supervisor of your wishes and continue to behave in a professional manner until the position is open for review.
If for any reason you choose to terminate a position, it is considered unprofessional if you submit your letter of resignation the same day as you resign. A two-week period is more suitable for most companies.
With today’s financial struggles, many companies are being forced to issue involuntary terminations. Some people are being fired, some are experiencing layoffs, and some are caught in the middle of business restructuring.
If you think you are being wrongfully terminated, you have the option of seeking legal assistance from your state’s labor commission or a private attorney. In today’s competitive environment, one must be resourceful, educated and proactive to feel competent when interviewing.
Acquiring marketable skills and a good education will enhance one’s chances for obtaining a variety of possibilities within the workforce.
Remember, in many circumstances, you determine your future.
