Beach Place future on Council agenda

GULF SHORES, Ala. — The Gulf Shores City Council met Monday afternoon at 4:00 pm . A major item heard by the council was the future of Beach Place which has remained rather undeveloped since Ivan. Shaul Zislin, local business man, presented a plan in concert with Hutchinson, Moore and Rauch, LLC of Foley, Alabama. The conceptual master plan (in color) was made available to the council and community planning.

At the outset Zislin indicated that the plan was improvisational and eventually be incorporated or taken out of the grand plan. “This is not the time to be executing the master plan. Maybe three or more years before we can do that,” he said. The financial burden must also be considered, he said.

The conceptual plan was advanced as itemporary or at least had time constraints depending upon when plan and finances could be guaranteed.

The Zislin/HMR plan suggested a large building that could contain a beach-style restaurant. It would be a steel structure dressed up and have garage-type doors for personnel passage and suited for flood conditions.

The perimeter of the building will be suitable for outdoor dining consistent with resort areas. Steve Foote, Planning Director, had previously reviewed the plan and felt that elevations could be instituted where needed.

The main building shares the midsection nearest the beach and in the environs to the north and west are recreational areas such as children’s play area, splash pool, green space and direct access to beach. via the service area. Limited parking will also be available on the east side, also bordered by shrubs.

Discussion centered around the necessity of control of people and traffic and that the use and curfew would guarantee a clean, healthy and sober atmosphere. Steve Foote said that other place in the city have similar arrangements that are under control.

The Mayor suggested that the matter be handed back to the Planning Committee to work with Zislin/HMR to finalize the proposal.
