FAIRHOPE, Ala. — The untold story of HealthSouth, “The Wagon to Disaster,” a book written by former HealthSouth co-founder and first CFO, Aaron Beam, a Baldwin County native, is now available for sale.
The, tell-all book, which was co-authored by Fairhope resident Chris Warner, will be signed by both authors on Tuesday, Nov. 17, at 6 p.m., at Page & Palette Bookstore, 32 S. Section St., in downtown Fairhope.
The duo will sign for the first time copies of Beam’s book on how he and Richard Scrushy founded one of America’s most successful health care companies — only for it to tragically end in disaster.
Scrushy once relied on the motivating mantra, “Pull the Wagon for HealthSouth,” having posters and T-shirts made to ensure that the slogan was omnipresent.
Readers will be given a chance to meet and talk to authors Beam, and Warner, who has also written a forthcoming novel on the story, “Professional Bone.”
In the “The Wagon to Disaster,” Beam details the true nature of the fraud, and more importantly, the true nature of one of America’s most sinister and reviled fraudsters — Richard Marin Scrushy — a hard-charging, caustic visionary whose Machiavellian tendencies ensured HealthSouth’s meteoric success, and oddly his predictable fall as the company’s benevolent dictator.
