Bears top Dolphins in season opener

GULF SHORES, Ala. — The Robertsdale Golden Bears varsity football team survived a see-saw battle in the first half, scoring 35 unanswered points in the second to claim a 56-21 victory over the Gulf Shores Dolphins Thursday night at Mickey Miller Blackwell Stadium in Gulf Shores.

Robertsdale scored 28 of their 35 points in the second half off of turnovers as the Dolphins fumbled twice and threw three interceptions in the second half, ending the game with a total of seven turnovers to only one for the Bears.

“We’ve been saying throughout the offseason that if we didn’t turn the ball over and were able to get turnovers defensively, we’d have an opportunity to be successful,” said RHS Head Coach Scott Phelps. “And that’s just what we did tonight.”

The second-half carnage began when Robertsdale’s Justin Vaughn intercepted a Brandon Silvers offering on Gulf Shores’ first drive of the second half.

Gulf Shores drove from their own 21 into Bear territory at the 44, but a sack by Cordero Dade dropped the Dolphins back 10 yards and Silvers was intercepted on the next play with Vaughn taking the ball back 20 years to the Gulf Shores 35. A penalty pushed the ball back to midfield before Robertsdale senior quarterback Caleb Sumrall ran for 16 yards back into Dolphin territory. Samuel Tolbert tacked on nine yards to the Dolphin 15 before Sumrall gave the Bears a first-and-goal, then punched it in from the 2 to give the Bears a 28-21 lead with 6:55 remaining in the second half.

After the two teams traded blows, Silvers was intercepted again, this time by Tevin Sykes, but Colby Norman’s 40-yard fieldgoal attempt to start the final period went wide left.

Gulf Shores then punted the ball back to the Bears and three-plays later, Sumrall connected with Matthew Maddox on a 71-yard strike and Norman added the extra point to make the score 35-21 with 7:49 remaining in the fourth quarter.

From there the wheels would fall off for the Dolphins, who fumbled after completing a pass on its first play of the ensuing drive.

A 28-yard strike from Sumrall to Maddox put the ball on the 3-yard-line where Tolbert would again hit paydirt with 5:26 left in the game.

Gulf Shores would then fumble the ensuing kickoff and Robertsdale recovered at the 19-yard line. Jeffrey Ryan Jr. scored from a yard out six plays later and Norman’s extra point would again hit its mark, making the score 49-21 with 2:20 left in the contest.

Twenty-one seconds later, Sykes got his second interception of the second half, running the ball back 40 yards for one final score with Norman’s extra point made the score 56-21 with 1:59 remaining and Gulf Shores only had time for three more plays as the clock ran out.

If was a fitting end for Norman to score the final point for the Bears. The senior kicker and kickoff returner for the Bears scored the game’s first seven points, running the opening kickoff back 76 yards, then tacking on the extra point himself to make the score 7-0 with just seven ticks off the clock.

But it was the Bears senior quarterback and sophomore running back, who spent a great deal of the second half lining up in a Wildcat formation, along with a stellar Bear defense, who would rule the day.

Sumrall and Tolbert combined for 356 of the team’s 381 total yards of total offense. Sumrall completed completed 12 if 18 passes for 206 yards with no interceptions, throwing two touchdown strikes and rushing for two more with 11 total rushes for 59 yards (Sumrall was sacked twice for minus-16 yards). Tolbert added a 3-yard touchdown run, finishing the game with 91 yards on 17 carries.

Robertsdale’s defense turned stingy in the second half, forcing five turnovers and holding the Dolphins to just 130 total yards in the second half after giving up three touchdowns and 287 yards in the first 24 minutes of play.

Silvers and running back Josh Carroll combined for 403 yards of total offense for the Dolphins with Silvers completed 29 of 48 passes for 324 yards and three touchdowns in the game and tacked on 12 yards on seven carries. Carroll added 65 yards on 13 carries, catching five passes for 50 yards and a score for GSHS.

After the opening kickoff, the Dolphin turned the ball over on their opening drive, but would eventually recover scoring on a 25-yard strike from Silvers to Chris Tilley with 5:14 left in the opening quarter.

Gulf Shores would take the lead to open the second period as Silvers connected with Carroll on a six-yard strike going up 14-7 with 11:49 remaining in the half.

Robertsdale tied the score just under two minutes later with Sumrall connecting with Maddox from seven yards out with 10:03 remaining in the half, then took the lead back on a 25-yard Sumrall scamper with 6:20 remaining in the half.

The Dolphins averted disaster in the first half after fumbling near midfield, giving Robertsdale the ball back at the Gulf Shores 42-yard line.

But a trick play by the Bears ended up backfiring after John Vaughn connected with Edward Williams after a reverse play. Williams would fumble, however, at the 1-yard-line and the ball would squirt through the endzone, giving Gulf Shores the ball at their own 20.

The two teams then traded punts before Gulf Shores would tie the score with under a minute to play in the half. Silvers completed four of seven passes on a nine-play, 61-yard drive, connecting with Alex Edwards from three yards out, tying the score with 47.4 seconds remaining in the half.

But the second half belonged to the Bears, who went on to score 35 unanswered points en route to a 56-21 victory.

Robertsdale will take its 1-0 record to face longtime rival Foley Friday night in 6A Region 2 action at Ivan Jones Stadium in Foley, while the Bears will open up their 5A Region 1 schedule at home against cross-county rival Spanish Fort.
