Becky Wells has been teaching third grade at Rosinton School for 12 years. She has 19 students this year and is one of the new, spacious classrooms.
Before she came to Rosinton, Wells spent seven years at Gulf Shores Elementary.
“I taught kindergarten and second grade,” she says. “I miss being at Gulf Shores for a lot of reason, but I am very glad to be where I am. It feel like 1 million years ago, but I keep in touch with a few friends there and sometimes check out their school website.”
When Wells first transferred from GSES, she spent three days a week at Rosinton and two days at Elberta Elementary teaching gifted education.
Wells grew up in the Rosinton community and has lived there most of her adult life.
“I am blessed to work here as my husband and I raise four daughters,” she says.
Wells truly enjoys teaching, especially reading.
“My students and I get into our stories,” she says. “I try to make it fun for them. It is a joy to see students get excited about what they accomplish, whether it be a writing assignment they worked to finish, mastering their math facts or become a little more tech savvy with their laptop.”
Wells says trying to cover objectives, encourage 8 years olds to make good decisions and help some of them deal with family issues is exhausting, but she has a motto that helps her through it all, “I’ll do the best I can.”
“I pray my efforts reach well into the future,” Wells says. “I will probably never know the impact I had. It’s a lot think about, especially when I look back on mistakes and can’t undo them. It helps me when previous students ask, ‘Can I come back to your class?’ or I hear from grateful parents.”
Wells and her husband have four daughters that are in college, high school, middle and elementary school.
“So I guess when asked how I spend my time, it’s a given,” she says. “We do a lot of homework, after-school sports and activities and are involved at church.”
After she puts in her hours for continuing education, Wells spends her summers as lazily as possible. She says it’s a time to do some things for herself and nurture friendships.
“Investing in children is worthwhile,” Wells says. “The successes I’ve had are because people invested in me. I’m a Christian and believe in God, and while I don’t pray with my students or discuss it with them, I hope they feel loved, important and capable. I tell me class I am not perfect, I don’t know everything and I want us to learn together.”
Then Wells smiles and says, “I’m allowed three mistakes a day and please don’t point them out. Be nice to your teacher.”
Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t.
TEACHER: Becky Wells
SCHOOL: Rosinton School
SUBJECTS TAUGHT: Third grade
SOMETHING UNUSUAL ABOUT YOURSELF: My students probably don’t know that I love to sleep late. I am a night owl and will read a book until I finish it. I can only do that during the summer!
