SPANISH FORT, Ala. — The Spanish Fort Fire-Rescue Auxiliary is hosting a barbecue benefit dinner from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Saturday to help offset medical costs for the Collier family.
Michael Collier, son of firefighter Nathan Collier, was diagnosed recently with Alexander disease, a rare and degenerative genetic disorder affecting the central nervous system. Funds from the benefit will be used to help pay medical bills from Michael’s extended stay at the University of South Alabama’s Women’s and Children’s Hospital and current hospitalization at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital.
“Michael’s dad has been one of our officers for more than 10 years, and we just want to do something to help the family,” said Sheryl Barrios with the auxiliary.
“We are supportive of the auxiliary’s effort, and our thoughts remain with our fellow firefighter and his family ….,” Spanish Fort Fire Chief Roger Few said.
The auxiliary is accepting $7 pre-orders through Friday, but Barrios said early donations to the cause ensure there will be plenty of plates available for purchase on the day of the event as well. Plates include barbecue pork, baked beans, cole slaw, roll, dessert and drink and can be picked up at Fire Station 1, located at 7580 Spanish Fort Blvd.
“People can come by until the food is gone,” Barrios said.
For tickets, call (251) 680-1796, Pam Few at (251) 802-6197 or Donna Hughes at (251) 463-6862.
