Bethany Ogden recognized as GCAC Scholar Athlete

GULF SHORES, Alabama — The Gulf Coast Athletic Club honored Bethany Ogden as Gulf Shores High School Scholar Athlete at the Club’s Jan. 23 meeting.

Bethany is a senior at Gulf Shores High School after moving with her family from Natchez, Miss. where she attended Trinity Episcopal School.

While at Trinity, Bethany excelled in basketball, track, cross Country, and Tennis. In basketball, she was named All Metro First Team, All District First Team, All District Tournament Team and MVP-All State Tournament Team and received the ‘Best Offensive Player’ Award. She also participated in Amateur Athletic Union Basketball from 2005-2009. In Cross Country she was named All State Class A, received the ‘Most Valuable Runner’ Award along with many other awards. She also excelled in track and tennis winning many awards and honors.

At Gulf Shores, Bethany is a member of the Gulf Shores High School Basketball Team where she led the team in scoring, rebounds, steals, and assists. In her varsity basketball career, Bethany has reached the milestone of scoring 1,935 points! In her senior year at Gulf Shores, playing in 20 games, she had 2 Triple Double games and 14 Double Double Games. She is a Juniorrette, a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Student Government Association and is very active in her church and community.

Bethany’s academic credentials are outstanding with an ACT score of 31 and is ranked 15th out of a class of 162 with a 4.12 GPA. She already has college credits from Copiah Lincoln Community College and Loras College. She has received many other Academic Awards and Honors including the President’s Award for Educational Excellence in 2011 and is a member of The National Honor Society and National Society of High School Scholars.

After graduation from Gulf Shores, Bethany will attend the University of Alabama where she has been accepted in the Honors program and is a recipient of a Presidential Scholarship. She will be majoring in Business Administration with an emphasis in Entrepreneurship and Accounting. She hopes to run family businesses after college and become a successful entrepreneur. During her college career at Alabama, she wants to continue her community service project of creating a quarterly newsletter for the Catholic Charities Guardian Shelter. She also wants to continue to give back to the community by being a part of regular projects and fundraisers in college.

"One person that has truly influenced my life is my mother," Ogden said. "The person I am today is because of her devotion and attention to me. She has taught me valuable life lessons and has always been there for me, through good times and bad times. My mother has not only taught me, but shown me, the definition of hard work, determination, and moral values. She has also instilled in me the importance of cherishing family members, maintaining close friendships, and living a Christian life.”

With this recognition, Bethany now qualifies for the scholarship presented by GCAC to a Gulf Shores High School Scholar Athlete at the end of this school year.
