Betsy Howey Sable, 90, born in Lake Forest, Ill. and a resident of Fairhope, passed away Thursday, Dec. 26, 2013.
She was a graduate of the Marietta B. Johnson School of Organic Education and later graduated from the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts, learning to design and create custom jewelry. She was a member of Midwest Designer Craftsmen.
Living in Chicago, she worked in various aspects of fashion and merchandising of displays in department stores. During that time, she continued designing jewelry, exhibiting her work in various museums in different states and held seminars on custom design and repair of gold and silver jewelry.
In 1983, she returned to her childhood home in Fairhope, continuing her craft of making, repairing and giving private instruction of gold and silver jewelry.
In 1987, she was commissioned by the Mardi Gras king to design and create his gift to his queen.
In 1988, Gov. Guy Hunt commissioned her to design and create the silver pin/pendant given to the wives at the governor’s conference held in Point Clear.
Surviving are her son, Stephen A. (Nona) Douglas of Kalispell, Mont.; four grandchildren, Kimberly (Todd) Schelling of Kalispell, Mont., Grace (Robert) Slaght of Renton, Wash., Stuart (Kolbie) Douglas of Boise, Idaho and Christopher (Kristina) Douglas of Japan; six great-grandchildren, Ryan Schelling, Grant Douglas, Kristiana Douglas, Evan Slaght, Avaree Slaght and Scout Douglas.
A celebration of Betsy’s life will be held at a later date.
