Big rigs banned from two Summerdale streets

SUMMERDALE, Ala. — Large trucks driving through Summerdale may soon have to find alternate routes as two byways will be off limits.

During its regular meeting Monday, the Town Council suspended the rules and passed a resolution restricting vehicle use of West Lee and Jackson streets. That restriction means that vehicles containing more than four axles will not be allowed on the two streets.

However, the resolution states that the restriction does not apply to the following:

  • Trucks engaged in moving or delivery of household goods, appliances and mail to and from individual residences.
  • Trucks for performing construction or maintenance, public or private.
  • All emergency vehicles, i.e. fire, police, ambulance, public service.

However, violation for other vehicles containing more than four axles could result in stiff penalties.

“Upon conviction for a first violation of this section, the driver of the vehicle shall be subject to a fine of $100,” the resolution states. “Upon conviction for a second or subsequent violation, the driver of the vehicle may be subject to a fine $500 and a sentence of five days in the municipal jail. In addition thereto, the Town may cause to be filed a civil action for collection of costs incurred to repair any damage arising from the unlawful operation of such vehicle.”

Because the resolution is required to be advertised about two weeks before it can go into effect, the Council set May 1 as the day restrictions will be enforced.

Summerdale Police Chief Jimmy Davis said police would visit Summerdale businesses to provide notification of the pending change.
