Leander Charles Birk, 82, a native of Minneapolis and a resident of Gulf Shores, died Tuesday, March 9, 2010.

In 1946 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, and was a veteran of the Korean War.

He retired after 34 years, from the Insurance Division of General Motors.

He was a member of Our Lady Of The Gulf Catholic Church, where he was on the parrish counsel. He truly enjoyed serving the church community. He cherished the friendships over the years and is thankful for all of the love, caring and support over the past several months during his illness.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and was instrumental with the implementation of the monument to the Unborn Child.

Survivors include his wife, Katie Birk of Gulf Shores; two sons, Thomas Birk of Gulf Shores and Michael (Kathy) Birk of Indianapolis; daughter, Patricia (Edward) Powers of Lisle, Ill.; four grandchildren, Tim and Jennifer Powers, Nicholas and Christopher Birk; and a brother, Clarence (Caroline) Birk of Minneapolis.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 15 at Our Lady Of The Gulf Catholic Church, Gulf Shores.
