Each year, nearly 5 million Americans need a blood transfusion. That includes accident victims, surgical patients, injured military, and more. That’s a startling number. Even more startling is the fact that less than 10 percent of Americans eligible to donate blood actually do.
Here at home in Baldwin County, the need for blood donations is dire. There is no substitute for blood, so our local hospitals depend on the supply of blood generated from local donors. The kindness of these donors saves lives every day.
On Wednesday, Dec. 2, 2009, Baldwin EMC will host its fourth annual Power of Giving Drive. This event is an opportunity for members of the community to show the selflessness and generosity that make Baldwin County great by donating blood or non-perishable food items.
Starting at 7 a.m., blood donations will be taken in our training center, located next to our headquarters on Highway 59 in Summerdale. We challenge everyone who is at least 17 years old, weighs at least 110 pounds, and is in generally good health to make a blood donation. And while we know for some the blood donation process may seem a little intimidating, the truth is it’s relatively easy, and definitely worthwhile.
Blood donations aren’t the only way to make a difference. We’ll also be collecting non-perishable food items on that day. As the economy struggles under the weight of recession, more and more families are finding it hard to keep food on their tables. The items donated at the Power of Giving drive will be packaged up for distribution to these families in need through Catholic Social Services in Robertsdale.
Our Power of Giving Drive will also include a health fair, where visitors can come receive free health and wellness screenings and information from local medical professionals.
In these times of economic hardships, it is vital that Baldwin County be a community of people that can depend on one other in times of need. When we work together in the spirit of kindness and generosity, we really can make a difference. That’s what the “power of giving” is truly about.
