Blount bounces Lady Tigers in Regional semi

MOBILE, Ala. — While posting one of their best records in recent memory, the Baldwin County High Lady Tigers of 2010-11 met up Tuesday with a powerful, well-rounded Blount team that never let up.

Baldwin County won 24 games and lost just four before meeting the Lady Leopards (Now 24-8) in the girls 6A South Regional semifinal at USA’s Mitchell Center where the Lady Tigers fell 58-36.

The only team they lost more than one game to, two to Davidson, also advanced to the finals Friday to face Blount at 6 p.m.

BCHS coach Robert Wills said despite the loss, his team had a lot of reasons to be proud.

“Well, record wise, this is one of the best ever. At least since I’ve been here. We made it to the sweet 16 before, my first year, in Troy. We didn't have a good start and you have to against a good team like Blount. From there it was a little bit of Blount and a little bit of ourselves at times and being a little intimidated by the surroundings I think. Their first time to be in a place like this, but they are young. A lot of them will be back and it's good for them to get this big-game, big-arena atmosphere under their belts. I'm really proud of how they fought all the way. They may have been intimidated by the environment, but they never played afraid of the other team. So I cannot take anything away from the success these girls have had all year. But the speed and physicality — of a team like Blount — you can try to practice for, but you can't really simulate it.”

Junior post player Alex Easley was taken from the court on a stretcher after a collision and fall on a rebound play in the first half.

“I think it was mostly a precaution,” Wills said. “Alex is a tough player and goes 100 percent all the time. If she could've she would have come right back and played the second half.”

By half time, the Lady Leopards were up by 20 points, thanks largely to six 3-pointers. In the second half BCHS held the Blount offense to 21 while scoring 19. In the third quarter, BCHS outscored Blount 13-11.

But the BHS full-court pressure was effective enough — even though the Lady Tigers were 19 percent better at the free-throw line — to maintain the big margin. Blount was 8-of-11 from the foul line. BCHS was 15-for-25 on free throws. The big differential was turnovers, 30-14 in favor of Blount. Then down the stretch, BHS used a strong stall in the fourth quarter to eat up the clock and hold their lead.

Baldwin County freshman CoCo Knight scored 16 points, grabbed eight rebounds and had three steals. Courtney Stanley added four points and a steal. Latreka Jenkins, Payton Creal and Maye (one steal) each had three points.

Ashley Lewis, Kantrell Bush and Easley (one steal, one rebound) each had two points. Nakea McDougal had one.

For Blount, Aundre Adams scored 17 points with four steals and Kenya Curtis added 15 points.
