FAIRHOPE, Alabama—An extensive search by Baldwin County law enforcement officers and investigators has not found the body of Donald Jefferson Howard, who they say was killed last Monday near Parker Road in Montrose.
On Friday, a Fairhope man, 22-year-old Immanuel Charles Jenkins, was arrested in St. Martin, Miss., and charged with capital murder in connection with the alleged Jan. 14 homicide and awaits extradition to Baldwin County, according to the latest information provided by authorities.
“The analysis of the evidence and statements obtained from witnesses has revealed that Donald Howard received horrific injuries that were not survivable,” Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office Maj. Stephen K. Arthur said in a statement Friday afternoon. “However, Mr. Howard’s body has not been recovered at this time. An extensive ground, air and K-9 search of the area around the crime scene completed today has not revealed the location of the body.”
The search for Howard apparently began Thursday night, after witnesses came forward that day about the alleged shooting death that occurred on Parker Road just outside Fairhope city limits.
The public first learned about the case through reporting Thursday night by Mobile televisions stations WKRG News 5 and Fox 10 News.
Baldwin County investigators, who were at the Parker Road location Thursday night, said they were looking for a body in the area, Fox 10 News reported at that time.
“Deputies said a witness came forward Thursday to report that a person had been shot on Monday, Jan. 14,” Andrew Perez of Fox 10 News reported. “According to investigators, that witness last saw the body at the mobile-home property off Parker Road and was reportedly too scared to report the crime.
“They said he even spoke to his attorney before contacting police,” Perez reported. ”Once on the scene, investigators said they found evidence to support the claim that someone was killed. Authorities said they have identified a suspect and are actively searching for him.”
WKRG News 5 also reported Thursday night that “a young man was shot and killed in a mobile home off Parker Road near High Ridge Road between Rock Creek and Fly Creek, but they don't have a body. Investigators are treating the case as a homicide.
“They say family members reported the victim's missing today, and earlier in the week a woman saw the victim's body,” WKRG News 5 reported.
About a dozen BCSO officers and investigators were at the Parker Road scene Friday morning and additional details began coming to light throughout the day. That information included the arrest of Jenkins in Mississippi, which John Rogers of Fox 10 News reported.
The Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone who has knowledge of the alleged crime, especially the location of the body of Howard, to call their office in Bay Minette.
