FAIRHOPE, Ala. — Page & Palette will host author Russell Blount on July 10, from 2 to 4 p.m. He will sign his book, “The Battles of New Hope Church.”

This history details the battles that took place in Paulding County, Ga. during the last week of May 1864. The action begins when Union general William T. Sherman attacks Atlanta and finds himself engulfed in a patch of dense woods known as the Hell Hole face to face with Joe Johnston’s Army of Tennessee.

The series of skirmishes that ensued, which include New Hope Church, Pickett’s Mill and Dallas, comprise a significant phase of the Atlanta Campaign.

More than a dozen chapters offer explanations on the battle strategies employed, and describe the conditions faced by the soldiers, with letters, memoirs and diary entries providing firsthand accounts of their horrific experiences. Maps depict the position of the brigades during battle while images include portraits of the men in uniform and illustrations of combat.

The Civil War enthusiast resides in Mobile.
