Bounds YMCA needs volunteers for Adaptive Aquatics program

DAPHNE – The Bounds Family YMCA in Daphne will offer Adaptive Aquatics in June, part of an effort to provide sports and leisure programming for kids of diverse abilities.  This first program is eight sessions, June 2-25, 10:30 a.m. -11:30 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Bounds Family YMCA at the corner of Whispering Pines and Pollard Road in Daphne.

"It's a much needed program that we have waited several years to happen," said Sonya Yates, a member of the YMCA advisory panel for children with disabilities. "As a special education teacher, I see the need for more programs like this and hope that once we get the word out that we will get more support."

The classes are full and the response from parents and families was immediate, which indicates a need in the area for this type of programming, according to a YMCA release.  However, there is still a need for volunteers to help the kids one-on-one in the water to facilitate their participation.

"Volunteers are an essential part of this as well as future adaptive programs," said program volunteer coordinator Julie McKiven.  "The need is immediate on this one as classes start June 2."

All of the kids in the Adaptive Aquatics classes are physically challenged.

"They not only need the support in the water, but most of them want to have (that extra support and contact) from someone other than parents — they rarely participate in activities independent of parents," McKiven said.  "This is an opportunity for them not only to learn swim skills, but to interact with peers and volunteers.  They really love and appreciate the volunteers."

Bounds branch executive director Jackie Clarke added that volunteers are needed all the time in a variety of ongoing and seasonal programs. "The Adaptive Aquatics program is part of the YMCA's year-round adaptive sports and leisure program called 'Y not!' and volunteers are always needed throughout the year," she said.
