DAPHNE, Ala.—The owners of Gulf Bowl in Foley have withdrawn the re-zoning request from B-1, local business, to B-2, general business, for the property at the southwest corner of the Lawson Road and County Road 13 intersection.
The public hearing and first read for the request was scheduled to be for Monday’s council meeting, the first of 2011. However, the updated agenda includes “withdrawn” next to the items.
Sonya Cole, one of the owners of the Foley bowling alley, said she wants to move onto a new property and does not want to “waste anymore time.”
“We’re moving on,” she said. “We’re not going to let this stop us.”
The decision to withdraw the re-zoning request came after the Daphne City Council voted 4-3 at the Dec. 20 meeting to not approve a Land Use ordinance change to the Table of Permitted Uses to allow bowling alleys and family entertainment centers in a B-1 zone. They are currently allowed in a B-2 zone.
The family presented to the Spanish Fort Planning Commission Tuesday to bring the family entertainment center to the city, and it seems they could be setting their sights north of Interstate 10 after two failed attempts to bring a bowling alley to the Jubilee City.
The Daphne Planning Commission voted 7-1 to give the re-zoning request an unfavorable recommendation at the Nov. 26 meeting.
