In a press conference this morning (Aug. 15), Fairhope Mayor Tim Kant requested and Baldwin County Revenue Commissioner Phil Nix agreed to extend the deadline to file property tax appeals to Friday, Aug. 17, 5 p.m.
“I understand you are the messenger and are getting a bad rap for it,” Kant said of Nix.
Nix also agreed to another request from the mayor to have the Board of Equalization meet at the satellite courthouses in Fairhope and Foley to make it more convenient for residents to appeal their appraisals.
The mayor also spoke about other avenues he was taking to help alleviate this situation at the local and state level.
“We have soaring increases in insurance and fuel costs are skyrocketing,” Kant said. “I’m concerned about our residents and small businesses,” adding they couldn’t take much more in increased costs and remain in their homes or keep their businesses open.
Nix announced he would be placing a book in the satellite courthouses that contained the 6,000 sales that were used in preparing this year’s appraisals. These sales will be listed in the order of the property parcel number and can be used as a reference tool for residents.
“We have received about 6,000 appeals so far,” Nix said.
