BAY MINETTE, Ala. — A high school student was arrested by Bay Minette Police Department last night for having a handgun on a bus.

Apparently the Baldwin County High School male student was showing the firearm to some middle school students. The students on the bus let school officials know that they saw a handgun.

Police followed up, arrested the student and took possession of the firearm. The firearm is with police, and the student is in police custody.

We’d like to commend the students for informing adults and we’d like to commend the Bay Minette Police Department for its methodical and professional work. The student will be suspended and will face an expulsion hearing. Details on the arrest will come from the police department media release.

Student safety is our top priority and it takes the entire community working together to keep our campuses and buses safe and as it was in this case, it takes students stepping forward doing the right thing to inform adults; they’re our best eyes and ears.
