June Iris Slaughter Brown, 65, native of Tensaw and a resident of Montgomery, died Saturday, April 5, 2008 after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
She graduated from Baldwin County High School in Bay Minette (class of 1960) and received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Alabama and both a Master of Science in Art Education and a Master of Science in Library Science from the University of Tennessee.
She was a prolific and award winning artist. She exhibited in major galleries and museums throughout the Southeast. She was included in numerous publications, acknowledging outstanding accomplishments in art and was given awards recognizing women of achievement.
In her career, she taught a variety of grades and subjects in the public schools of Alabama and Tennessee. She also worked as a librarian at Tulane University in New Orleans, LA and the Alabama Public Library Service in Montgomery, from which she retired in 2002.
Survivors include her husband, Jim E. Brown of Montgomery; son, Julian L. Brown of Cincinnati; mother, June Whiting Slaughter; three sisters, Marilyn Slaughter (Ross) Davidson, Anabeth Slaughter and Claudia ā2Gā Slaughter Campbell, all of Tensaw; brother, Carl Morton (Carol) Slaughter Jr. of Birmingham; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her father, Carl Morton Slaughter Sr.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 13 at Montgomery Hill Baptist Church in Tensaw.
