ROBERTSDALE, Ala. — Theresa Bryant, the principal at Robertsdale High, announced that she was retiring Sept. 30. Steven Grant, a long-time assistant principal, was named as the interim principal until the position is filled permanently.
“My health has been bad over the last two months and so has my mother's health,” Bryant said, when contacted at home.
Bryant taught for five years in Mobile prior to coming to RHS. She has been at RHS since 1984 as a teacher, then an administrative assistant, an assistant principal and finally as principal.
“The school was my life, and my health suffered due to stress I placed upon myself regarding RHS,” she said “I left behind a group of wonderful students, staff, and friends. I feel so good today knowing that I don't have to do any ‘school work.’ ”
Paul Hollingsworth, who previously had retired, was brought in to help the other assistant principals, such as Teddy Mitchell, Andy Benton, and Grant with the day-to-day running of the school.
“I want to thank everyone for the support you have given me during this time of transition,” Grant said. “I am excited about the things we can continue to do here at RHS.”
Grant announced that mid-term exams for third and fourth blocks will be given on Oct.11 and those for first and second period will be given on Oct. 12.
During a Monday morning staff meeting Dr. Alan Lee announced that Craig Ross, the principal at Spanish Fort Middle School, would assume the interim principal’s responsibilities through the end of the year.
“Robbie Owen, who is the principal at Rockwell Elementary School, had originally been appointed to this position, but decided to stay at his current position,” Lee said.
When questioned by the faculty about his choice Lee said that when all was said and done it was his decision and that he alone answered to the school board and the community.
“I wanted someone in this position who already had experience as a principal,” he said. “I believe you will like Craig Ross, as he’s a team player who will help you realize your future goals.”
The senior portrait and fall picture make-up day will be held in the RHS Library on Oct. 14.
Coach Scott Phelps, the RHS athletic director, said, “Senior Night for the fall sports will be held at J.D. Sellars Stadium the evening of the 14th. We’ll be playing the McGill Yellow Jackets. This is a great opportunity for our seniors to be recognized for all of their hard work and commitment.”
The RHS vs. McGill High game will be the last home game of the season as it will be followed by Baldwin County High and Faith Academy on the road.
The Fellowship of Christian Athletes is currently planning a “Fields of Faith” event, which will be held at the football stadium Oct. 14, beginning at 6 p.m.
The seniors will have a meeting in the cafeteria during first block on Oct. 24.
Junior class T-shirts are being sold by the junior Student Government Association students for $12 each. The T-shirts will be sold through Oct. 21.
First Priority/Pulse will meet each Tuesday at 7:15 a.m. in the cafeteria, and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes meet each Friday morning at 7:10 a.m. in the library. Everyone is invited to attend these meetings.
