James A. Buffler, 86, born May 28, 1923 in Florence, died Sunday, April 25, 2010 in Fairhope.

A World War II veteran of the U.S. Army, he was a graduate of the University of Alabama and continued his love of education at the University of Tennessee, where he was an active student until the age of 83.

In his early years he owned and operated cotton gins in Florence, and Weslaco, Texas. Prior to moving to Knoxville, Tenn., he worked for the Boeing Co. on the space program. He retired from the Tennessee Department of Labor – TOSHA, after 32 years of service.

Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Mildred Eckl Buffler; son, Mark A. (Janice) Buffler of Springfield, Va.; two daughters, Mary Lynn (Jerrry) Bryant of LaGrange, Ga., and Debra (Bill) Cotten of Fairhope; four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; and a sister, Angela McIngvale of Houston.

A memorial service will be held at a later date in St. Florian, Ala.
