UMS-Wright played a near-perfect floor game, shot better than 50 percent for most of the game, and shut down Spanish Fort’s offense Tuesday night to claim a 54-25 boys basketball win in the SFHS gym.
The Bulldogs committed just nine turnovers in the game and didn’t allow Spanish Fort to convert any of them into points. The Toros also managed just four second-chance points off their eight offensive rebounds.
Spanish Fort shot just 20 per cent from the floor, sinking nine of 45 shots including four 3-point field goals in 21 attempts. UMS-Wright finished 20-for-44 overall, missing three of its four 3-point attempts, and out-rebounded the Toros 42-20.
The Toros committed 14 points and the Bulldogs converted them into 10 points.
Daniel Crane scored 20 points to lead UMS-Wright to its 11th win against six losses. He scored 11 points in the third quarter when the Bulldogs increased a 26-13 halftime lead to 42-17 entering the final stanza.
Gordon Terry was also in double figures for UMS-Wright, finishing the game with 10 points. Max Bubalo led Spanish Fort with 13 points, including three 3-point field goals in the fourth quarter.
Bubalo also nailed a 3-pointer in the second quarter when he scored all seven of Spanish Fort’s points.
An 8-0 UMS-Wright run to start the game set the tone. Spanish Fort scored the next four points and closed to 11-6 at the end of the quarter. The Bulldogs went went 5-for-8 on 2-point field goals to the Toros’ 2-for-7. Spanish Fort was also 0-for-5 on first-quarter 3-pointers.
SFHS fell steadily further behind in the second quarter. Crane scored six second-quarter points to help the Bulldogs build their double-digits halftime lead.
In the third quarter, Spanish Fort could manage only a 3-point field goal by Alex Grant with 5:40 remaining and a free throw by Keith Evans at 4:09. UMS-Wright outscored Spanish Fort 8-0 in the remainder of the third quarter even though the Toros committed only two turnovers in the quarter.
Bubalo opened the fourth quarter with a 3-pointer, only to have UMS-Wright reel off eight straight points for a 50-20 lead with 4:56 to play when Terry scored on a layup.
The loss dropped Spanish Fort’s record to 10-8.
