FAIRHOPE — Head coach Terry Curtis and his UMS Wright Bulldogs defeated Spanish Fort 35-21 Friday night. Fairhope played host to Spanish Fort's home game this week as the Toros continue the season without a home stadium.
Spanish Fort quarterback Logan Rogers delivered another valiant effort completing 19-27 passes for 274 yards and two touchdowns. Rogers also added 16 carries for 59 yards and a touchdown on the ground.
UMS established the running game early with sophomore tailback Brandon Lee who stands only 5'8" 150 pounds. Lee ran hard all night moving the chains and actually took on a work horse type role in the Bulldog offense. Lee finished with 27 carries for 125 yards and 2 touchdowns.
UMS got on the board first with 7:54 left in the first quarter on a 8 yard run by Bill Davis. Following a second Toro three and out, the Bulldogs had good field position again and drove 35 yards for another touchdown scored by Lee. UMS dominated the field position game all night with average starting position in Toro territory. The first quarter ended with UMS leading 13-0. With 6:46 to go in the first half Spanish Fort scored on 39 yard strike from Rogers to Tyler Yates.
The PAT was good and Toros pull within six. On the following kickoff UMS return man Daniel Crane went untouched on a 75 yard return for a touchdown. The Bulldogs would hold on to the 21-7 lead going into halftime.
UMS would strike first in the third quarter on a 3 yard touchdown run by Davis. The Toros would answer less than a minute later with a 15 yard touchdown throw from Rogers to Michael Parrish. Spanish Fort's Rogers and UMS's Lee would then trade touchdown runs in the fourth quarter to complete the final score of 35-21.
Spanish Fort running back Brent Duke had 3 receptions for 99 yards on the night. Michael Parrish finished with 5 receptions for 64 yards and 1 touchdown. UMS improved to 3-5 on the year while Spanish Fort fell to 3-5.
