ORANGE BEACH, Alabama — Get ready for another round of Bulls on the Beach.
Actually, this year’s event, which will be held at The Wharf in Orange Beach, will feature three rounds of competition.
“The Wharf is hosting Western Heritage Month in March and we’re going to be right in the middle of it,” said Robertsdale native Cody Harris, star of CMT’s “Sweet Home Alabama” and “Southern Nights,” who is one of the event’s organizers.
In an interview for the first Bulls on the Beach event in 2012, Harris said he got the idea for the series while he was filming Southern Nights in Savannah, Ga.
As soon as filming ended, he called Jerry Byrd, who has experience coordinating similar events. The two formed a partnership called Bulls on the Beach LLC, and a production company called Ranchey Productions and the event, “Bulls on the Beach” was born.
The event, which begins Saturday, March 16, and continues Saturday, March 23, will feature top bull riders from across the United States, culminating in a championship event to be held Saturday, March 30.
Gates for all three shows open at 6 p.m. and the event begins at 7:30 p.m. For tickets, visit the Ranchey Productions website at www.bullriding247.com, in person at The Amphitheater box office, or through Ticketmaster, www.ticketmaster.com or by calling 1-800-745-3000.
“We’ve had champions in Robertsdale and champions in Foley, but this will be the first-ever bull riding champion to be crowned in Orange Beach,” Harris said. “It’s going to be huge.”
Last year’s Bulls on the Beach event held in August at Live Bait in Orange Beach, was a big success, as was the Bonfire Jam event, held in December in Chumuckla, Fla., Harris said, and the three-week-long event, sponsored by Jim Beam, The Wharf, Coast360 and Compass Media, may prove to be the biggest yet.
“We certainly couldn’t do this without the support of The Wharf and the city of Orange Beach,” Harris said. “We appreciate everything they’ve done for us.”
The event will also feature entertainment for kids of all ages and appearances by stars from both “Sweet Home Alabama,” and “Southern Nights.”
All three shows will be filmed for a new reality series that will air on the National Geographic Channel, which will star Harris and Bubba Thompson from season three of “Sweet Home Alabama,” among others.
Hundreds of tickets have already been sold for the event, Harris said. A total of 1,500 tickets are available.
“We’re going to keep selling tickets right up to the event,” he said. “Between the competition and the reality show coming right in the middle of Spring Break along the Gulf Coast, this is going to be a huge draw for Gulf Shores and Orange Beach and we want everyone to come out and enjoy ‘Bulls on the Beach.’”
