Lloyd Edward Burris, 79, of Loxley, died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2008.

He was born in Bush City, Kan., and moved to Garnett, where he graduated from Garnett High School.

In 1948, he joined the Navy, earning his pilot wings. From 1960 to 1963 he served as flight deck officer on the U.S.S. Forrestal.

In 1975, he retired as a captain, and moved to Daphne, where he was a homebuilder for 15 years. He loved to hunt, and was an avid Bridge player. He was director of the Foley Duplicate Bridge Group, and a member of Daphne United Methodist Church.

Most of all, he was a loving husband, father, grandfather, greatgrandfather, uncle, and friend to all.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Joan Altmyer Burris; children, Greg (Kay) Burris of Daphne, Paige Chappelle of Foley, and Andy (Tricia) Burris of Birmingham; grandchildren, Jessica (Ken) Sanders of Foley, Karl Brantley of Fairhope, Hope Chappelle of Foley, Drew Burris of Daphne, Andrea Burris, Manon Burris, and David Burris, all of Birmingham; great-granddaughter Catie Sanders of Foley; brother, Lester Burris of Garnett, Kan.; three sister, Helen Burcham of Garnett, Kan., Ruby Knauss of Houston and Thelma Smith of Bartlesville, Okla.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Jan. 3 at Daphne United Methodist Church.
