FOLEY, Ala. — U.S. Congressman Bradley Byrne spoke to a full room of Foley Optimist Club members Wednesday at Gift Horse Restaurant in Foley.
During that time, he answered questions from attendees. One of them was from Foley Councilman Ralph Hellmich.
“Do you think the log jam will be broken if the Republicans take over the Senate?” he asked.
Currently, Republicans have the majority in Congress and the minority in the Senate.
In this coming Tuesday’s elections, voters will cast their ballots in 33 Senate races across the nation.
“Yes,” Byrne answered, explaining that the nation’s leadership would not change. “But the president is still going to be president.
He also pointed out that other issues need to be addressed in the federal government, as well.
“Everybody needs a Constitutional mind set in Washington,” Byrne said. “Congress has got to understand we’re not the commander in chief. The national defense of this country has been confused.”
He attributes that confusion to statements and actions made by President Barack Obama. However, Byrne also said that while Congress does not have the same authority as President Barack Obama, neither does he have the same authority as Congress.
“The president has got to stop trying to write laws,” Byrne said.
