Cabaret fundraiser coming Sept. 25

DAPHNE, Ala. — The Baldwin County Training School Heritage Fest 91 Foundation will host “Purple & Gold Cabaret” from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Sept. 25 at Bayfront Park.

Tickets for the fundraiser cost $20. There will be dancing and a buffet for attendees. The attire for the event is “Sunday’s best” according to a foundation news release.

Proceeds will go toward scholarships and upkeep of the Black Education Museum, said Gartrell Agee, chairperson of the foundation. High school students are eligible for the scholarships.

“We are trying to keep up the values and the heritage of the Baldwin County Training School from the students to the staff,” Agee said.”

So, we are giving scholarships to descendants of people that attended.”

The Baldwin County Training School—erected in 1941, and which once exclusively served black students—became the Black Education Museum and is located just near W.J. Carroll Intermediate School.

The foundation has held around 10 cabarets in the past, Agee said, but not all happened at the same time during the year, and different locations have been used. The first cabaret event was at the Fairhope Civic Center, she said.

“There will be a lot of wolverines at the event, which used to be our mascot,” Agee said, referring to the historic school. “When we have an event like this, there are usually a lot of people who haven’t seen each other in a long time, and so it’s a lot of fun.”
