SPECIAL OLYMPICS FUNDRAISER

DATE/TIME: Friday, 7-11 p.m.

LOCATION: West Beach Grille. The Gulf Shores Police Department and The West Beach Grille are teaming up to raise money for the Special Olympics.

COST: Tickets are $40 a piece, and this fundraiser includes a full four-course meal at West Beach Grille and a live band for your entertainment. $17 from each ticket sold  goes to support the Special Olympics, so the more  who get involved the better!  Tickets are available at the Gulf Shores Police Department. TROPICAL TRIVIA NIGHT

DATE/TIME: Friday, 6:30 p.m.

LOCATION: Orange Beach Adult Activity Center. The Friends of the Orange Beach Library invite you to test your trivia skills. You can also bring snacks and libations to see you through the evening.  There will be eight rounds of trivia questions, with a maximum participation of 80, eight to a table.

COST: Teams of eight can buy a table for $100, or individuals can participate for $12.50 and be teamed at a table.

PERDIDO VINEYARD AND LUNCH

DATE/TIME: Friday, leave Harry Roberts Community House at 300 E. 16th Ave. in Gulf Shores at 10:30. Enjoy a buffet lunch at the Stagecoach Café before journeying on to the vineyards to tour and taste the many flavors of wines and vinegars produced and bottled in South Alabama. BOATING AND SAFETY COURSE

DATE/TIME: Saturday, The course runs from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

LOCATION: Orange Beach Community Center. Course is offered by the Perdido Bay Power Squadron. The course meets the Alabama boating license requirements mandated for operating any type of watercraft in state waters.     Instruction is provided free by experienced members of the squadron. You may pre-register and materials for the course may be purchased at the Coleman Outlet Store or Blue Water Ship’s Stores, both located in Foley. Fee of  $50 covers all class materials, including a text book, an instructional video on chart navigation, two CDs and lunch for one person. If multiple family members are attending only one book is necessary and a small fee will be charged for additional lunches.  Class will be limited to 20 students.

THE ORIGINAL GERMAN SAUSAGE FESTIVAL

DATE/TIME: Saturday from 8 a.m.-5 p.m.

LOCATION: Elberta Town Park, Main St., Elberta. The best German Sausage you have ever tasted! Made from a secret recipe developed by the founding fathers of Elberta. Arts & crafts, live music, carnival rides, baked goods & more. Don't forget to visit the Bier Garten for a large selection of imported beers.

FREE CHOLESEROL, GLUECOSE, ANEMIA AND BLOOD PRESSURE TESTING

DATE/TIME: Tuesday, 9-11:30 a.m.

LOCATION: Parking lot of the Gulf Shores First Presbyterian Church located at 309 E. Ave., Gulf Shores. Fasting for 4 hours prior to testing is recommended, but not required.

COST: This free-to-the-public event is hosted by Sacred Heart's Mission in Motion Team and the Christian Service Center Emergency Aid agency of Gulf Shores.  The Christian Service Center, now celebrating its 20th year serving this community, is located at 317 Dolphin Ave., Gulf Shores.

AFTERNOON MATINEE SERIES

DATE/TIME: March 30, 3 p.m.

LOCATION: Orange Beach Library. This 1999 film, “Remains of the Day,” starring Anthony Hopkins, Emma Thompson, James Fox and Christopher Reeve, is an adaptation of the book of the same name by Kazuo Ishiguro. Shown in the meeting room of the Orange Beach Library, 26267 Canal Rd., Orange Beach

PROJECT REBOUND OF BALDWIN COUNTY DATE/TIME: March 30, 11:30 a.m.

LOCATION: Harry Roberts Community House located at 300 E. 16th Ave., Gulf Shores. Attend a brief session conducted by Project Rebound, a community based program that provides referral and counseling services to those impacted by the recent oil spill and other disasters. The session will last approximately 30 minutes.

The goal of this festival is to promote and raise public awareness that not only is our local seafood the best in the nation, but is most importantly safe, fresh and abundant. The festival will be a kaleidoscope of fresh, local seafood, fine wines, crafted micro- brews, arts and crafts and an opportunity for area restaurants to showcase various recipes using only fresh local seafood.

SPRING BIRD BANDING SESSION 2011

DATE/TIMES: April 2-April 14, 7 a.m.-noon

LOCATION: Fort Morgan, 51 Alabama 180 W., Gulf Shores, the Alabama Gulf Coast is a critical stopover point as migratory birds return from Central and South America. Banding hours are from before dawn to mid-afternoon, depending on the flow of birds. Bring a lawn chair, binoculars and inquisitive mind but leave the pets at home.

COSTS: Admission to Fort: $5 adults, $3 children 6-12, free to younger children. Banding is free.

SOUTH BALDWIN COMMUNITY THEATRE PRESENTS: THE EMPEROR’S NEW CLOTHES

LOCATION: South Baldwin Community Theater, 2022 West Second Ave, Gulf Shores. An Emperor who cares for nothing but his wardrobe hires two weavers who promise him the finest suit of clothes from a fabric invisible to anyone who is unfit for his position or “just hopelessly stupid.” The Emperor cannot see the cloth himself, but pretends that he can for fear of appearing unfit for his position or stupid; his ministers do the same. When the swindlers report that the suit is finished, they dress him in mime and the Emperor then marches in procession before his subjects. A child in the crowd calls out that the Emperor is wearing nothing at all and the cry is taken up by others. The Emperor cringes, suspecting the assertion is true, but holds himself up proudly and continues the procession.

LOCATION: Orange Beach Sportsplex, 4389 Bill Silvers Road, Orange Beach. Benefits the Orange Beach sportsplex and BARC. Lots of food and fun for the whole family is being planned and local artist and craftsmen will be displaying and selling their works. Food booths will be available and include German sausages, corn dogs, nachos and fresh strawberry shortcakes. In addition, the festival will feature our second annual Open Car/Motorcycle Show and a community yard sale with a wide variety of “treasures from the attic”. BARC pet adoption and parade. Alcohol-free event! Proceeds from the festival will benefit local charities in Baldwin County.
