Margaret “Midge” Hermecz Callaway, 87, of Gulf Shores, died Thursday, Nov. 20, 2008.
Her family moved to Baldwin County Feb. 11, 1911 after they migrated to the United Sta6tes from Austria and Hungary in 1906.
They raised their children in the Lillian Community where she was born.
She married Laurence “Bunny” Callaway in 1937 and moved to the Lagoon neighborhood, where folks farmed the sea. They celebrated 51 years of marriage while she helped himn shrimp and fish.
She managed Callaway’s Store on Gulf Highway and Callaway Cottages on the Lagoon. She was also known from her weekly news as Lagoon Correspondent for over 40 years.
She was the “flower lady” for always sharing them. She was asked to help with plans for the Gulf Shores Maritime Museum and contributed gifts to begin the museum. Most of all she was known for being a homemaker and always having her home open to others for meals at the “Bunny Hutch” where she lived for 71 years.
She was preceded in death by her husband. Laurence “Bunny” Callaway.
Survivors include three daughters, Lillian (Donald) Bemis of Gulf Shores, Joy Buskens Robinson of Gulf Shores and Mary Beth Hayes of Bon Secour; nine grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 21 at Holy Spirit Episcopal Church in Gulf Shores. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 22, at the church with the Rev. Chris Coat officiating. Burian will follow at Wallace Cemetery.
The family requests memorial donations be made to the charity of your choice.
