GULF SHORES, Ala. — Before Midge Callaway’s death in November 2008, she wanted to get the Joe and Mabel Callaway home at the end of East Ridge Road in Gulf Shores listed on Baldwin County’s Historic Places.
Even though she had been a correspondent for The Onlooker and later The Islander for 40 years, it had become harder and harder for her to write a story that she felt needed to be told about the Callaway-Amacker home.
So her daughters, Lil, Joy and Beth, encouraged her to finish her last story that she accomplished four months later.
The family is sad she cannot be here to be at the presentation, but her presence will be remembered by everyone who knew and loved Midge and her husband, Bunny.
The home was built in 1908-09. Originally, the home had handmade shingles out of black cypress from the meadow north of them. Most of the neighbors were kin folks, and when the fishermen could not fish they helped build the home.
The windows came from Mobile via sailboat. One of the windows was used at the Pilgra“midge” picnic at the Joe Callaway Landing on the Lagoon.
