Former Spanish Fort High football player and alleged rapist Cameron Harrison was back in a Baldwin County courtroom last week, as his defense attorneys withdrew their request for youthful offender status for Harrison.
Harrison’s legal team said it was a decision made by Harrison and his family.
“It is a risk and it was a tough decision for Cameron and his family to make, and they made that decision” defense attorney Mike Dasinger said.
He added that the defense team and the family felt that a jury trial would the evidence they feel exonerates Harrison to come to light publicly.
“The jury trial aspect appealed to him more so,” Dasinger said. “The facts and evidence we have, we felt that that would be a better decision.”
Assistant District Attorney ChaLea Tisdale said they had always pushed for Harrison to be tried as an adult.
“This really doesn’t change my case at all,” Tisdale said.
The judge also ordered the removal of the GPS ankle monitor Harrison had been required to wear the last several months as a condition of his bond.
Harrison is still restricted from having any contact with the alleged victim and his curfew will continue to remain in effect.
“The sad thing to me is, she didn’t do anything wrong and she is being punished more than he is right now,” Tisdale said.
The potential jury trial could begin as early as September.
