BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The Birmingham-Southern College Student Government Association recently held elections to select officers and representatives to lead the campus governing body during the 2008-09 academic year. Area students chosen are: Amy Monroe of Daphne, an undecided major, junior representative; and Ashley Russell of Fairhope, an interdisciplinary biology/psychology major, senior representative.
BIRMINGHAM, Ala.— A number of Birmingham-Southern students were presented awards by the college’s Department of Education during the 2008 Honors Day Convocation.
Alexandra K. Raber, a sophomore elementary/collaborative education major of Fairhope received the Betty J. Poole Junior Award for Excellence in Collaborative Teaching, given to rising juniors in collaborative education who demonstrate outstanding performance in working with special needs students and named after the late BSC collaborative education professor.
BOSTON, Mass. — Brenna R. Malloy of Fairhope has been named to the dean’s list at Boston University for the fall 2007 semester.
CHARLESTON, S.C. — Cadet Dewitt Miles Jones of Point Clear was recently honored for outstanding academic achievement at The Citadel, the Military College of South Carolina, during the spring semester of the 2007-08 academic year. Jones, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Miles F. Jones, is a biology major.
Jones achieved Dean’s List recognition, which is given to those cadets and active duty military students registered for 12 or more semester hours whose grade point ratio is 3.2 or higher with no grade below a “C” for the previous semester’s work. In addition, he earned a Gold Star for achieving a 3.7 GPA or higher.
Decatur, Ga. — Searcy (Buz) Wilcoxon of Fairhope received the master of divinity degree on May 17, during the commencement exercises of Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur. This year, 103 degrees were awarded in five graduate degree programs.
Wilcoxon also won the Wilds Book Prize and an Anna Church Whitner Fellowship for 2008. His award and fellowship were announced during the commencement exercises.
On May 31, 5 p.m., Wilcoxon was ordained by the Presbytery of South Alabama. The service of ordination took place in the sanctuary of Trinity Presbyterian Church in Fairhope.
Wilcoxon will then move to Greenville, S.C., where he will begin serving as the associate pastor for youth, young adults and mission at Fourth Presbyterian Church.
JACKSON, Tenn. — Lorena Spencer, a senior biology major from Fairhope, has been named to Lambuth University Dean’s List for the 2008 spring semester for achieving a GPA of at least 3.5 while enrolled for at least 12 semester hours.
JACKSONVILLE, Ala. — Wilbur Lock and Vanessa Saffold, both of Fairhope, received undergraduate degrees at Jacksonville State University’s 2008 spring commencement, held May 2.
MONTGOMERY, Ala. — The Alabama Home Builders Foundation awarded scholarships to three Baldwin County residents, two of whom reside on the Eastern Shore. Aaron Ayers, the son of Tommy and Robin Ayers of Daphne, received a $250 scholarship to study engineering at the University of Alabama; and Lauren Ashleigh Shaw, the daughter of Gregory and Tammy Shaw of Fairhope, received a $500 scholarship to study interior design at Auburn University.
MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Haley Evans, a junior at Fairhope High School, was selected as an Ambassador in the 2008 Alabama Students Against Tobacco Ambassador Program. These ambassadors are recruited to speak out against the use of tobacco products amongst their perrs and to record public service announcements that will encourage students to remain tobacco free.
Montgomery, Ala. — Lambda Pi Eta, the official communication studies honor society of the National Communication Association, inducted Caroline Baldwin, Class of 2009, Communication Studies major, of Fairhope, at Huntingdon College this spring.
Montgomery, Ala. — The Huntingdon College Offices of Admission and Student Life have announced the students selected to serve as 2008-09 orientation leaders. These leaders conduct new student orientation groups during summer orientation sessions. Jesse Collinsworth, a sophomore biology major of Fairhope is one of students selected.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Nicholas Christian Rueter, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Martin J. Rueter of Point Clear, was named to the Vanderbilt University dean’s list for fall 2007 semester for receiving grades equivalent to a 3.5 on a 4.0 scale for the term.
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. — Catherine E. Fleury of Fairhope was named to the Marist College Dean’s List for the fall 2007 semester. She is a member of the Class of 2008 and is majoring in psychology special education.
Savannah, Ga. — Jennifer Sharpe, an art history major, of Fairhope was named to the dean’s list at the Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Ga. for winter quarter 2008. Full-time undergraduate students who earn a grade point average of 3.5 or above for the quarter receive this recognition.
STARKVILLE, Miss. — Kathleen C. Moran of Fairhope was named a Dean’s Scholar for the fall semester at Mississippi State University for achieving a grade point average between 3.5 and 3.79 while completing at least 12 semester hours of course work with no incomplete grades or grades lower than a C.
Area students named President’s Scholars for the fall MSU semester for achieving a 3.80 or better GPA while completing at least 12 semester hours of course work with no incomplete grades or grades lower than a C are: Lauren J. Hailey of Fairhope and Joshua C. Caldwell and Lauren M. Miles, both of Spanish Fort.
TALLADEGA, Ala. — Tasha Ostrowski of Fairhope was named to the High School Department “A-B” Honor Roll for the 2nd 9 Weeks at the Alabama School for the Deaf.
TROY — The following local students received degrees from Troy University at recent commencement exercises: Judson Morgan Davis and Brittany Grace Desotell (Summa Cum Laude), both of Daphne, bachelor of science degrees; Holli Anne Keaton (Magna Cum Laude) and Sarah Morgan Shepherd, both of Fairhope, bachelor of science degrees; Kristina Alayne Murfin (Cum Laude) of Silverhill, bachelor of science degree; and Jessica Erin Stauffacher of Spanish Fort, master of science degree.
