Cancer awareness caravan to The Wharf set for Saturday

SPANISH FORT, Ala. — Supporters of Spanish Fort Fire and Rescue have definitely proven they “Care Enough to Wear Pink.”

Fire Chief Roger Few said patrons have purchased more than 500 Spanish Fort-specific pink T-shirts benefiting cancer research and awareness to date.

About 200 remain for purchase, he said.

“Care Enough to Wear Pink” is part of a countywide campaign organized by the Lower Alabama Chapter of the Arizona-based Guardians of the Ribbon. Pink T-shirts unique to each department’s locales have been sold toward the purchase of a fire engine to paint pink in an effort to keep cancer awareness visible in the community.

The Baldwin County efforts, spearheaded by the Orange Beach Professional Firefighters Local 4309, culminates Saturday when the national “Pink Heals Tour” swings through the area en route to Starkville, Miss., from Tallahassee, Fla. An awareness event will be held at The Wharf in Orange Beach from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.

“A fire engine has been purchased by the Lower Alabama chapter,” said Keith Kyte with the Orange Beach local.

Capt. Brad Jernigan, who is coordinating Spanish Fort’s participation in the program, said Saturday’s festivities begin at the Robertsdale Fire Department with a caravan to the Wharf.

The Spanish Fort T-shirts cost $10 each and are available at Fire Station 1 on Spanish Fort Boulevard, across from City Hall, from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Monday through Friday or through the department’s website at www.spanishfortfire.org.

Few said they will also be available during an Oct. 16 open house at Fire Station 1.
