BAY MINETTE, Ala. - A benefit yard sale will begin Saturday at 7 a.m. and continue throughout the day at the old armory site in Bay Minette for Jessica Railyn Norton, 14, who suffers from cancer of the central nervous system.
Railyn is the daughter of Bay Minette natives Chris and Tajauna Norton, who currently live in Loxley, but are planning to move back to Bay Minette, according to Kathy Benton, her aunt.
Railyn is diagnosed with Ependymoma. She was 4 when she had her first surgery to remove a tumor behind her right eye.
The operation resulted in vision loss. A post-operation staff infection developed in her forehead and a small metal plate was installed.
That operation resulted in damage to facial muscles. At age 9, the tumor returned and the right eye was removed, Benton said.
Removal of a spinal tumor resulted in loss of movement of her limbs, and a tumor in her left eye soon will cause total blindness, Benton said.
Tumors developed on her brain stem and lower spine.
“She cannot move her legs and has little use of her arms,” Benton said. “She now has a tumor in an ear and she is going deaf.”
Railyn is undergoing surgery in Memphis, Tenn., and also is being treated by Mobile and Birmingham physicians.
“She is and always will be a fighter,” Benton said. “Please keep her in your prayers and hope that someday there will be a cure for this disease.”
Donations to the Railyn Norton fund may be made at any United Bank location.
