DAPHNE, Ala.—The United States Sports Academy and the University of Technology, Jamaica negotiated a new sports education program on July 31 to assist in the development of the Caribbean School of Sports Science.

Arthur Ogden, the academy’s dean of academic affairs, was contacted by UTech representatives about the sports program through a course that he taught at the University of the West Indies in Kingston, Jamaica, in July.

UTech’s athletic program has produced 80 percent of Jamaica’s Olympic medal winners in recent years, including 2008 Olympic triple gold medalist Usain Bolt, the world record-holder in the 100 and 200-meter dash.

Ogden taught a five-day seminar in sports marketing in Kingston that was arranged by the academy’s Continuing Education Department. Patterned after the academy’s structure, the CSSS will offer majors in various sport disciplines such as sports management, sports coaching and sports medicine and is scheduled to begin with the January 2010 term.

The five-day, eight-hour per-day seminar is the academy’s first project with the International Best Practices Network, an education-management organization arranged by Len Davidson, IBPN’s vice president of client services.
