Carl Maurice Fremaux, born Jan. 2, 1918 in Houston, a resident of Spanish Fort, died Monday, May 16, 2011 at Westminster Village.
He lived in New Orleans from his very early years and graduated from Tulane University in 1939 with a business degree. He was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha and served as its president his last two years.
He was a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II prior to beginning his career with Southern Bell Telephone Company (currently AT&T) in New Orleans. Southern Bell transferred him to Atlanta and then to Florida where he retired in 1982 after 43 years of service. He and his wife have made their home at Westminster Village in Spanish Fort since 2005.
He was a lifelong community volunteer having served as president of the Fort Pierce, Fla., Rotary Club and Chamber of Commerce as well as the Daytona Beach, Fla., Rotary Club, where he was made a Paul Harris Fellow.
He was president of the Bethune-Cookman College Board of Counselors, the Extended Family of Daytona Beach, and the Volusia County Chapter of United Nations/U.S.A. He served two terms as chairman of the Board of the Ormond Beach Memorial Hospital, was chairman of the American Red Cross, the United Way campaign and the United Negro College Fund.
He was also on the boards of the Flagship Bank of Volusia County, Century Federal Savings and Loan Association, Ormond Memorial Art Gallery and Gardens, Museum of Arts and Sciences, the Halifax Club, Oceanside Country Club, and the Board of Trustees of First United Methodist Church of Ormond Beach.
In his later years, he was a mentor with the Great Kids program at the First United Methodist Church of Ormond Beach and is currently a member of Spanish Fort Presbyterian Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry J. And Lillian F. Fremaux; and three brothers, Emmett H. Fremaux, Louis S. Fremaux, and Roy Fremaux.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Audrey Weeks Fremaux; daughter, Gayle F. Boland of Atlanta; son Cary C. (Cyndy) Fremaux of Houston; three grandsons, John A. Boland IV, Carl F. (Innes) Boland and Andrew T. (Jennifer) Boland; brother, Lloyd J. (Marjorie) Fremaux; several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 18 at Spanish Fort Presbyterian Church.
