Robert “Bob” Carney died Wednesday, June 18, 2008 at Westminster Village in Spanish Fort.
He was born Nov. 15, 1914 to Sally Walker and Edward Donnell Carney in New York, and grew up in Meridian, Miss. He attended Ole Miss where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity and served in the Navy during World War II.
His personality and ability to communicate served him well in his long career with newspapers and advertising.
He was recruited by the national firm of Storey, Brooks and Finley and moved to Atlanta in early 1951. In 1963 he was chosen as advertising editor of the Atlanta Times, the first new major paper in that city in over a century. His final years in advertising were served as vice president of Family Weekly, the internationaly circulated Sunday magazine supplement.
In addition to his many professional achievements he was also the author of “What Happened at the Atlanta Times” and “The Other Mississippi” (a memoir of his childhood in Meridian, Miss.)
A lifelong visitor to the Gulf, he chose Baldwin County for his retirement home. An accomplished golfer, he was a fixture on the links at Lake Forrest for many years.
Survivors include his wife, Louise Rossen of Springfield, Tenn.; two daughters, Gloria Cox of Houston and Joann Hummell of Austin, Texas; son, Robert (Karye) Carney Jr. of St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands; three grandchildren, Walker and Wallis Carney, and Katherine Hummell Hayes; and many friends.
Cremation arrangements are by Mack Funeral Home & Crematory Inc., Robertsdale.
